In the era of modern research technologies, we generate more valuable data than ever. However, we still have a major accessibility problem. How to make data more accessible to its target groups? How to connect citizens with science? What about a business or a politician?

That’s why we at CSC, National Library of Finland, IT Center of University of Helsinki and Helsinki Think Company call together Wide – Open Source Science, a challenge and hackathon for developers, students, researchers, technologists and other open science and open source enthusiasts. The mission is to bridge the gap between science and society.

Wide consist of two tracks with two different approaches:

CODING TRACK: If you’re into code, you can dive into the technological side of open science and play with the provided data sets. Collect a team of 2-5 and craft a solution using the given APIs.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY TRACK: If you’re more of a generalist, you can take a more conceptual, multidisciplinary
approach. Collect a team of 3-5 or let us match you with a team to co-create a concept to make science more accessible.

WHAT: Hackathon & multidisciplinary challenge for open source science.
START: FRI 26/10 4PM
END: SUN 28/10 2PM
WHERE: Leipätehdas, Helsinki.
NO TEAM YET? Apply as a solo agent, and we will help match you with a team.

Eligibility

This event is open for all: developers, students, researchers, technologists and other open science and open source enthusiasts. The mission is to bridge the gap between science and society.

Requirements

The coding track challenges teams of 2–5 to apply their skills and cutting-edge technology to solve the accessibility problem of open research. Your task is to create a solution that helps scientific archives become more attractive and accessible for all.

For inspiration, your team’s solution could for example be:

A search engine. How about creating a search engine that recommends interesting content based on your previous searches? Or what about a gadget combining current topics and history, something like the FINNA BOT?

A visualization. Think about the phase in time when the word “sushi” became more common in archives. Could you visualize this development and the other phenomenon that are related to it? Or how would you visualize the way punk subcultures have followed and developed immigration movements inside Finland?
